How do I remove the Jeep Wrangler soft top and hard top?

In case you hadn't heard, the Jeep Wrangler recently underwent a full redesign, and as one of the first Jeep dealers in the Lynchburg, VA area to get our hands on it, we can safely say that it is awesome! It's hard to reinvent an icon, but there's no question that the Jeep Brand knocked it out of the park. In particular, one of our favorite things about the new Jeep Wrangler is just how it's easier than ever before to remove the hard top and soft top and enjoy open air driving. In fact, we'll gladly show you how to do it here at Billy Craft Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram.

How to remove the Jeep Wrangler soft top

  • First you'll want to remove the rear window and rear quarter panel windows. These unsnap and slide out, so it should only take a few seconds.
  • Next, look under the front sun visors inside the cabin. You should see two latches that you can release. Unclasp them and you can fold the top back into the Sunrider Position.
  • Finally, head around the back of the vehicle and look underneath the soft top that hangs over the rear cargo area for another latch. Pull that and you can fold the whole soft top back.
  • Secure the folded soft top with straps and you're good to go!

How to remove the Jeep Wrangler hard top

  • To remove the hard top, you'll need the tool kit that was provided with your Jeep Wrangler
  • First you'll remove the roof panel that goes over the driver's seat. There are just a few screws on each corner so it'll pretty easily pop out.
  • Next you're going to want to find the wiring harnesses in the rear that connect to the lights. To disconnect them, simply pull down on the red locking tab, and then keep it depressed as you pull down to disengage it. Make sure those wiring harnesses are secured before you move on to the next step.
  • Undo the bolts that secure the hard top to the frame of the Jeep Wrangler. There will be four on each side. Two are above the driver and front passenger seat on the outside of the vehicle, and there are three more on the inside of the cargo area. Make sure to stow the bolts in a secure place before moving on.
  • Finally, with someone else to assist you, lift the hard top up and away from your vehicle and you'll be all set. Just remember that it's a good idea to stow the hard top in a garage or somewhere away from the elements if you're going to go topless in your Jeep Wrangler long term.
